This is a remarkable collection of abstracts of wills, administration accounts, deeds, land patents and court orders gathered by the late Edward Pleasants Valentine from the county and state archives of Virginia. It was the purpose of Mr. Valentine to use this data as source Material in the compilation of a comprehensive history of the Valentine and related families. He contemplated a family history different from the usual genealogy. His ideal was a work that would illustrate, by its comprehensiveness, the social and economic life of Virginia for three centuries Mr. Valentine died in 1908, before completing his work, but he/left his collection of data to the Valentine Museum, in which he has shown enthusiastic interest as a member of its board of trustees for many years. Believing that it would be impossible for anyone else' to prepare the history of the family as Mr. Valentine had planned it, the Board decided to publish the whole collection of notes and references as it stood, without elaboration into a, continuous historv, and thus gives the public the result of this extensive investigation. In the course of his research, Mr. Valentine became interested in thirty-four families. He had a thorough and exhaustive examination made of the county and parish archives of Virginia for references to each of these families. As a result of this method of investigation, thousands of references were discovered which not only provided information for the history of the families in which Mr. Valentine was specifically interested, but also disclosed clues to the genealogy of hundreds of other 'families. The publication therefore will prove of value not only to those who are descended from the families whose history forms the basis for the principal studies, but to thousands of others who are related to families whose names appear incidentally.
